Insight: Komen charity under microscope for funding, science
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Susan G. Komen for the Cure charity defines its mission as finding a cure for breast cancer. Paltalk News - Researcher Who Advocates Smacking Children, Airline Safety Expert
Marjorie Gunnoe, a psychology professor at Calvin College, and airline safety expert Kevin Schatzle will be today's guests on News Talk Online on the Paltalk News Network at 5 PM New York time. Gunnoe has created international controversy with her research that concludes that children under the age of six who are smacked by their parents grow up to be happier and more successful than those whose parents spared the spankings. Gunnoe says the data show that claims that avoiding spanking children makes them more adjusted are wrong. Her research concludes that children who had been spanked up to the age of six performed better in nearly every positive category and no worse in the others than those who were not. It's a huge controversy in Britain where the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has been advocating outlawing the spanking of children. Schatzle will talk about the very topical issue of airline security. He has an extensive background as chief of security for a number of major international corporations. He has served as both an FBI and a Secret Service agent and is a former decorated officer with the New York City Police Department where he was assigned to both the Bank Robbery and Terrorist Task Forces. Schatzle is a proessor at Seton Hall where he teaches New Jersey State Police troopers and is an advisory board member for Suspect Detection Systems - an Israeli company that specializes in suspect profiling.

New York State Teacher of the Year: Debra Calvino
New York State Teacher of the Year: Debra Calvino , Valley Central Teachers Association. Debra Calvino, a 27-year math teacher at Valley Central High School in Orange County, known for helping generations of students to love mathematics, was named the 2010 New York State Teacher of the Year by the Board of Regents As a teacher leader, Calvino uses her math skills in a different way: She serves as a master trainer in data analysis, fostering district-wide support for and use of data-driven instruction to improve student achievement. She has also enhanced district resources through her extensive grant writing and advocacy efforts. "In a state known for the quality and professionalism of its teaching force, to be named Teacher of the Year is indeed a high honor," said NYSUT President Dick Iannuzzi. "We applaud Debra Calvino for her work with students, her colleagues and her community. She is a fitting choice to represent all the terrific teachers in our state." NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira said Calvino mentors other teachers and has inspired many to enter the field of teaching. "She is a wonderful ambassador for our profession," Neira said. "Mrs. Calvino puts children first, mentors and trains colleagues, and is a great union advocate," said Valley Central Teachers Association President Tim Brown. "She truly lives up to our slogan: There are no greater advocates for children and education than teachers and teacher unions." The 40th New York State Teacher of the Year ...

New York: Close Spofford Campaign | CJNY Justice Spotlight
Video by Shadi Rahimi and Yoram Savion United to Stop Spofford Campaign www.facebook.com RALLY AT SPOFFORD MARCH 23, 2011 @4-6PM! New York City currently operates three high security juvenile detention centers where children under the age of 16 are incarcerated. Locking up children in these facilities is expensive, harmful to their development, and actually makes it more likely they will re-offend. There are already community-based alternative to incarceration programs that better serve children without jeopardizing public safety. People who care about our children are calling on the city to Close Spofford for the following reasons: Too many children are incarcerated: More than 5000 children in New York City are admitted to detention every year. Many people thing that the city's youth jails are full or dangerous, violent offenders. In fact, only 8% of the children admitted to secure detention centers are youth charged as "juvenile offenders" and tried as adults. The vast majority of children admitted to secure have committed misdemeanor offenses and are charges as juvenile delinquents. Spofford is use to incarcerate way too many children who have committed only minor offenses and should not be in jail. Jail is Too Expensive: New York City spends an unbelievable amount of money to lock up children. The cost of one bed for one night in Spofford is $620, which means that it costs more than 225000 per year to lock up just one child. Experts agree that detaining children hurts ...
