The Winston-Salem Foundation: Youth in Transition Community Collaborative
At the age of 18, many foster care youth living in Forsyth County find themselves alone, trying to make their way in the world without the necessary skill sets or supportive relationships to do so. This video describes the underlying issues that led to the development of the Youth in Transition Community Initiative of Forsyth County - a comprehensive community plan to improve the outcomes of foster youth. A governing committee representing diverse Forsyth County individuals and organizations, and a Youth Leadership Board, comprised of previous and current youth in foster care, have worked together to research existing programs, identify service gaps, and bring together beneficial services to meet the needs of these youth in our community. Invaluable program support has also been provided by the Jim Casey Youth Opportunities Initiative, a leader in working with communities throughout the US to improve outcomes for youth in foster care. Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina will become the program's lead agency, utilizing their experience and existing resources to implement supportive programs such as Youth Opportunities Coaches, mentoring programs, housing support and financial literacy training. In May 2011, Youth in Transition was awarded a 3-year grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in the amount of $486565 for operating funds to support the initiative's financial literacy training.
