New York City Bans Smoking in Plazas, Parks and Beaches
Tobacco smoking in parks and public squares is banned in more than 500 US towns in 43 different states, according to the American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation. This week, [Monday, May 23] New York City joined the list, outlawing smoking in all city parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas. The goal, officials say, is to protect nonsmokers from the health risks of drifting secondhand smoke. Some critics say the rule is illogical, since smoking remains legal on sidewalks, where fumes may be harder to avoid. Carolyn Weaver has more.
