"So long as we have enough people in this country willing to fight for their rights, we'll be called a democracy." - ACLU Founder Roger Baldwin The ACLU is our nation's guardian of liberty, working daily in courts, legislatures and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that the Constitution and laws of the United States guarantee everyone in this country. These rights include: Your First Amendment rights - freedom of speech, association and assembly; freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. Your right to equal protection under the law - protection against unlawful discrimination. Your right to due process - fair treatment by the government whenever the loss of your liberty or property is at stake. Your right to privacy - freedom from unwarranted government intrusion into your personal and private affairs.

Noam Chomsky: The ACLU Is a Conservative Organization
March 1989 www.amazon.com Watch the full lecture: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Noam Chomsky is an Institute Professor and professor emeritus of linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Roger Nash Baldwin became head of the National Civil Liberties Bureau (NCLB) in 1917. An independent outgrowth of the American Union Against Militarism, the Bureau opposed American intervention in World War I. The NCLB provided legal advice and aid for conscientious objectors and those being prosecuted under the Espionage Act of 1917 or the Sedition Act of 1918. In 1920, the NCLB changed its name to the American Civil Liberties Union, with Baldwin continuing as its director and Walter Nelles as chief counsel. Jeannette Rankin, Jane Addams, Crystal Eastman, Albert DeSilver, Helen Keller, along with other former members of the NCLB, assisted Baldwin with the founding of the ACLU. Among the founding members was Felix Frankfurter, who later became an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. DeSilver and Nelles were Baldwin's closest associates. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) consists of two separate non-profit organizations: the ACLU Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization which focuses on litigation and communication efforts, and the American Civil Liberties Union, a 501(c)(4) organization which focuses on legislative lobbying. The ACLU's stated mission is "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this ...

Glenn Beck, Tides Foundation, Shoot-out in California
www.thesoapboxroadshow.com Bryon Williams, 45, a convicted felon with two prior bank robbery convictions, targeted workers at the American Civil Liberties Union and the Tides Foundation, said Oakland police Sgt. Michael Weisenberg in court documents. While the ACLU is a favorite whipping boy of the radical right, not many people have heard of the Tides Foundation. Unless, of course, they listen to Glenn Beck. Beck has decided to make the Tides Foundation a target, attacking the group again and again from his pulpit.

ACLU
The ACLU of Colorado officially was charted as the seventeenth affiliate of the National ACLU on March 27, 1952. Its establishment was the culmination of a period of informal activity beginning in the 1930s. Attorney Carle Whitehead and the Rev. Edgar Wahlberg, minister of Grace Community Church in Denver, were the first spokespersons for civil liberties, and they worked closely though informally with Roger Baldwin and the National ACLU during those decades. By 1941 HJ Crim, Philip Hornbein Sr., Philip Hornbein, Jr., the Rev. Hal Roberts and Stanley Redneck had joined Whitehead and Wahlberg. After World War II, the number of Colorado members of the National ACLU increased to a point which justified recognition of an affiliate. In 1952 the National Executive Director, Patrick Malin, met in a Denver hotel with Whitehead, William Reynard, Charles Graham and Glen Donaldson. This group worked out the mechanics of establishing an affiliate, and on March 27 of that year the membership adopted a constitution, by-laws and a resolution on local objectives and the local organization was officially recognized as "the Colorado Branch of the American Civil Liberties Union." In the 1950s, the climate of political hysteria made it difficult to recruit cooperating attorneys. Consequently the bulk of litigation in those years fell on Carle Whitehead, Bill Reynard, Charles Graham, Arnold Alperstein, Edward Sherman and Edward Sears. The first Executive Director of the ACLU was Glenn Gregory ...
