Interview with ABC News (Building With Books)
Building With Books President and CEO Jim Ziolkowski talks with ABC News about BwB's history, its mission and its future. BwB is a not-for-profit organization that engages primarily urban youth through after-school programs and in their classrooms. We integrate global education presentations into social studies classes, and through our after-school programs students contribute intensive community service while helping to build schools in developing countries around the world. In the past year, students in the US contributed over 99000 hours of service and have touched the lives of more 150000 elders, homeless, disabled, young children and others through BwB. We have established these programs in more than 100 schools in New York, Connecticut, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Illinois and California. 97% of the American high school students we have worked with over the last five years are now in college. Since we began in 1991, BwB has built schools in remote villages of developing countries on four continents. We have just completed construction of our 250th school. There are now more than 100000 children and parents that have attended BwB schools built world-wide. Please feel free to connect with BwB here on YouTube. About Building with Books
Building with Books (BwB) is anon-profit organization that empowers primarily urban US high school students through in-class and intensive after-school programs. In addition to tremendous contributions of community service in their own cities and neighborhoods, BwB youth actually build schools and bring literacy to children and adults in developing countries around the world. BwB programs are designed to build confidence and real-world capabilities in American youth while also empowering communities world-wide to overcome the crippling cycle of illiteracy, poverty and low expectations by opening the door to education. BwB's unique approach not only encourages involvement but produces tangible results. In the past year alone, BwB students in six US regions have contributed more than 100000 hours of service and touched the lives of 156000 elders, homeless, disabled and young children in their communities. Since 1992, US student volunteers have helped build more than 260 schools in rural regions of developing nations including Haiti, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, Nicaragua and Senegal. More than 108000 children and adults have attended those schools, with 30000 currently enrolled. Cumulatively, parents in developing countries have contributed more than 510000 volunteer work days toward building schools, taking the first step toward changing their own lives and their societies. The significance of such involvement cannot be minimized. Villagers in developing nations are becoming ...
