The Missing Middle: Building on Microfinance. Small grassroots businesses—such as coffee farmer cooperatives and artisan associations—are engines for sustainable development and poverty alleviation in rural communities in the developing world. Considered too small and risky for mainstream banks and too large for microfinance, these grassroots businesses are caught in the “missing middle”; they cannot access the capital they need to grow and sustain their operations. Root Capital addresses this market failure through an innovative lending model that serves the needs of these remote grassroots businesses. We are creating a new class of capital sitting between microcredit and commercial lending, enabling rural communities to unlock wealth and build sustainable livelihoods.

Get to the social root of the problem — James Clemence and Margaret Duong
FEB 6 — As he prepares to deliver the 2012 Budget on February 17, the Singapore finance minister is in an unenviable position. The global economy has not rebounded with the vigour hoped for 12 months ago. It appears the road to recovery may be longer, and perhaps steeper, than many had originally anticipated. TEDxBYU - Willy Foote - Root Capital: Pioneering Rural Finance for the Missing Middle
Willy Foote, Founder and CEO of Root Capital, describes the challenges faced by small and growing businesses (SGBs) in remote rural areas. These businesses support the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers and artisans in developing countries. By providing capital and financial training to these grassroots businesses, Root Capital helps SGBs realize their potential to address global poverty and transform rural communities in Africa and Latin America. Willy's speech focuses on both his personal reflections as a social entrepreneur and Root Capital's growth as a force for change. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxBYU, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Meet Willy Foote. William Foote was an investment banker during the Latin American growth years of the early 1990s. After the peso was devalued in 1994, he spent two years in rural Mexico studying and writing about the financial crisis and its effects on rural people and the environment. He founded EcoLogic Finance (now Root Capital) to provide loans of between $25000 and $500000 to small and medium-sized enterprises working in sustainable agriculture and fisheries, wild-harvested products, certified wood and ecotourism. Since inception, Root Capital has made 550 loans valued at over $120 million to rural producers in Latin American, African and South Asian countries, with a 99 percent repayment rate. Its has also provided financial training to 55 grassroots businesses representing 27000 small-scale producers.
