Himalayan Cataract Project
After traveling the world and creating images of his experiences, Michael S. Lewis, MD wanted to help those without sight view their own surroundings. Therefore, all the profits from his books, Seeing More Colors: A Guide to a Richer Life, and One World: A View of Seven Continents, will benefit the Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP). This organization, co-founded by Chicago area ophthalmic surgeon, Geoff Tabin, has restored sight to more than 400000 patients in Tibet, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Sikkim. It now has extended into Ghana in West Africa. Dr. Tabin not only performs the cataract surgery but also teaches local doctors how to perform the operation—and then leaves the equipment for the doctors to carry on the work against blindness. At present there are 20000000 people who cannot see their hands in front of their faces. Typically after cataract surgery they can see perfectly.

Himalayan Cataract Project in Ethiopia
The Himalayan Cataract Project www.cureblindness.org coordinated an eye care intervention in Koraro, Ethiopia, in late-April 2008 in partnership with the Millennium Villages Project. During the intervention in the research village of Koraro, Ethiopia, the team examined 3650 people, provided 129 cataract surgeries, pterygia surgeries and over 100 trichiasis surgeries for trachoma. In addition, the entire village received a mass treatment of Zithromax for trachoma, reading glasses were distributed and Vitamin A was provided. The exams revealed a high incidence of Trachoma and blindness from Trachoma, significant vitamin A deficiency and many people who were blind from cataracts. The team went on to Hawzien and Quiha Hospital in Mekelle for hundreds more screenings and cataract surgeries. HCP director Dr. Geoff Tabin and HCP board member Dr. Matt Oliva are among the doctors shown in this video.
