Hyacinth King: Formerly Homeless Advocate
Hyacinth King used to be homeless living in an appliance box on the streets of Philadelphia. She suffered from mental illness and substance abuse problems that made it difficult to escape homelessness. Now as a long time resident at Project HOME she has gotten the help she needed to turn her life around and help others who are homeless do the same. Hyacinth is an advocate for the rights of homeless people and helps with Project HOME's street outreach program by sharing her own stories to connect with others. Project HOME is an organization in Philadelphia that helps homeless individuals break the cycle of homelessness through street outreach, supportive housing, community development, educational opportunities, and employment. By addressing the root causes of poverty and homelessness, Project HOME strives to end homelessness and advocate for social and political change on behalf of homeless and low-income individuals.

Days of Awe, Days of Art: Val Rossman and Mary Scullion at Rosenfeld Gallery
The painter Val Rossman's art opening last week at the Rosenfeld Gallery occurred between the Jewish "Days of Awe". It was very fitting since her opening doubled as a fundraiser for Project Home, an organization which works to help the homeless of Philadelphia. In attendance were Sister Mary Scullion, co-founder of Project Home, and the philanthropists Harold and Lynne Honickman. Val's work was breathtaking and a portion of her sales will be given to Project home.

Volunteers count homeless in SEPTA concourse
On January 31st, at 11 pm, in the midst of a winter storm, roughly forty volunteers gathered at Project HOME head quarters at 15th and Fairmount Ave. for instructions on how to count those experiencing homelessness on the streets of Philadelphia. Volunteers were put into groups and assigned areas to conduct a headcount of the city's homeless population. Volunteers took opposite sides of the Center City SEPTA concourse, often a refuge for people living on the streets. For the full story go to: bit.ly
