International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) is both a provider of and an advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights. One of six Regional Offices of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, we serve our 41 Member Associations in the Western Hemisphere offering technical assistance and training and capacity-building in a number of programmatic areas and skills, including proposal writing and evaluation. We work in six areas; Abortion, Access, Adolescents, Advocacy, AIDS/HIV/STIs and Building Stronger Institutions.

A call for young people to ‘get angry’ about global warming

¡Basta! Women Say No to Violence
Gender-based violence is any act or threat of physical, sexual or psychological aggression against a woman. It is a human rights violation, and is one of the most serious public health problems worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, one out of every four women reports having been a victim of sexual violence perpetrated by an intimate partner. Considering the harmful effects that violence can have on a woman's health, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region developed a regional project to combat gender-based violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. This video was created as a tool to sensitize health care providers and the general public about the issue of violence against women. The women who appear in this video are clients of member associations of the Federation and they all have attended individual or group counseling sessions. All of them obtained clear information about how their interview would be used and consented freely to being interviewed.

¡Basta! The Health Sector Addresses Gender-Based Violence
Gender-based violence is any act or threat of physical, sexual or psychological aggression against a woman. It is a human rights violation, and is one of the most serious public health problems worldwide. Considering that violence can have harmful effects on a woman's health, particularly her sexual and reproductive health, the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region developed a regional project to help clients at its clinics who are survivors of violence. This video presents some of the lessons learned from these experiences, and offers a summary of the steps that the health sector can take to fight violence. Even though this video may cover some of the key issues that must be considered in any health care institution, those institutions that are interested in improving the services they offer to survivors of violence should seek additional training and resources. Throughout this process, always keep in mind that the most important thing to protect the women's safety.

Help PROFAMIL Help Haiti
Amidst the rubble from the devastating earthquake that shook the Haitian capital and its surrounding areas earlier this month, it is clear that recovery and rebuilding efforts are merely just beginning. International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) has sent a three-person emergency response team to Haiti to work side by side with PROFAMIL, IPPFs Member Association in Haiti. PROFAMIL knows Haiti because their staff consists of local Haitian nurses, doctors and volunteers who have been providing quality reproductive health services on the ground since 1984. PROFAMILs two largest clinics (that two weeks ago each served 200 Haitians a day) in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel have been destroyed in the earthquake. PROFAMILs staff is working to set up set up temporary distribution points to provide first aid, as well as obstetric care and basic surgery. PROFAMIL is organizing its outreach workers who, starting this week are moving through the main tent cities providing essential supplies and contraceptives, along with basic counseling and information.
