International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) is both a provider of and an advocate for sexual and reproductive health and rights. One of six Regional Offices of the International Planned Parenthood Federation, we serve our 41 Member Associations in the Western Hemisphere offering technical assistance and training and capacity-building in a number of programmatic areas and skills, including proposal writing and evaluation. We work in six areas; Abortion, Access, Adolescents, Advocacy, AIDS/HIV/STIs and Building Stronger Institutions.

Help PROFAMIL Help Haiti
Amidst the rubble from the devastating earthquake that shook the Haitian capital and its surrounding areas earlier this month, it is clear that recovery and rebuilding efforts are merely just beginning. International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere Region (IPPF/WHR) has sent a three-person emergency response team to Haiti to work side by side with PROFAMIL, ippfs Member Association in Haiti. PROFAMIL knows Haiti because their staff consists of local Haitian nurses, doctors and volunteers who have been providing quality reproductive health services on the ground since 1984. profamils two largest clinics (that two weeks ago each served 200 Haitians a day) in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel have been destroyed in the earthquake. profamils staff is working to set up set up temporary distribution points to provide first aid, as well as obstetric care and basic surgery. PROFAMIL is organizing its outreach workers who, starting this week are moving through the main tent cities providing essential supplies and contraceptives, along with basic counseling and information.

Obama to restore US funding for international abortion
Obama to restore US funding for international abortion President Barack Obama signed an executive order Friday overturning a ban on US funding for international groups that provide abortion-related services. The decision is expected to re-start debate between pro- and anti-abortion activists, but, the decision will come as a relief to some organizations that believe they were unfairly punished under the rule. The executive order ends the ban on federal government fundings for international groups that are in any way involved with abortion services, including counseling. Critics called the ban the "global gag rule" because it forbade medical providers from even using the word "abortion," a source of contention for free speech advocates. Carmen Barroso, director of the International Planned Parenthood Federation western hemisphere, whose organization has received no US money for the past eight years, said the "gag" policy has not only adversely affected abortion services, but also the ability for clinics to distribute contraceptives and other preventative information. "With less money, family planning associations are less able to provide the services to the people who are most vulnerable, who most need it, because they cannot afford to pay for services," she said. "So family planning programs help women to avoid unwanted pregnancies and therefore avoid the need for abortion. So if anybody is against abortion, they should also be against this policy." Sin duda alguna, la explosión demográfica mundial tiene en serios problemas a nuestro planeta. Más de seis mil millones de seres humanos poblamos hoy la tierra, exigiéndole recursos a un ritmo que difícilmente nuestro planeta puede reponer. Los expertos internacionales advierten que la contaminación, el calentamiento global, la escasez de agua y la exagerada demanda de tierras para alimentar a más de seis mil millones de habitantes, está poniendo en serio peligro la supervivencia de la humanidad. En Costa Rica, por ejemplo, nuestra población hace 50 años era de un millón de habitantes, hoy, somos casi 5 millones y seguimos creciendo rápidamente. Una de las organizaciones que tratan de contener el crecimiento de la humanidad es la Federación Internacional de Planificación Familiar, la ONG más grande del mundo, después de la Cruz Roja internacional. Esta organización tiene más de 40 años de promover la educación sexual, para controlar la transmisión de enfermedades sexuales y los embarazos no deseados en el mundo, en más de 150 países. Hoy, la encargada del hemisferio occidental de esta organización, Carmen Barroso, está de visita en Costa Rica y vamos a aprovechar para hablar con ella sobre este problema mundial.
