Guthrie Theater

The Guthrie Theater, founded in 1963, is an American center for theater performance, production, education and professional training. By presenting both classical literature and new work from diverse cultures, the Guthrie illuminates the common humanity connecting Minnesota to the peoples of the world. The Guthrie Theater opened on May 7, 1963 with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater's founder. The idea of the theater began in 1959 during a series of conversations among Guthrie and two colleagues—Oliver Rea and Peter Zeisler—who were disenchanted with Broadway. They wanted to create a theater with a resident acting company that would perform the classics in rotating repertory with the highest professional standards. The Guthrie became a prototype for an important new kind of theater in contrast to the commercial environment of Broadway. There, the high costs associated with mounting a production increasingly mandated that shows must be immediately successful at high ticket prices. The Broadway atmosphere was conducive neither to producing the great works of literature, nor to cultivating the artists' talents, nor to nourishing the audience.

Guthrie Theater's 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof': Fiery family drama fizzles
"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" trucks in the most primitive aspects of humanity: desire, love and sex. Life and death. Greed. Playwright Tennessee Williams packed a lot of juice into this family drama, but the Guthrie Theater production doesn't give it much of a squeeze.

Have you ever been stuck in a gawker slowdown? It's what happens when a traffic accident on the opposite side of a divided highway inspires the drivers on your side to slow down and inspect the damage.

Guthrie Theater: 2010 in Pictures
With a lineup of 21 memorable productions and presentations entertaining audiences from all corners of the globe, the Guthrie Theater has been a hub of non-stop activity during the past 12 months. As we close the year on yet another high note, with our sold-out run of The 39 Steps and all-new production of our holiday classic A Christmas Carol, we fondly remember Joe Dowling's lean and muscular production of Macbeth, Kneehigh Theatre's bubbly Brief Encounter, David Henry Hwang's stunning M. Butterfly, Rebecca Gilman's deftly fresh Dollhouse, the powerfully provocative Broadway-bound engagement of The Scottsboro Boys, John Miller-Stephany's vivid staging of A Streetcar Named Desire, and the sweeping world premiere of The Master Butchers Singing Club. We remember our exciting partnerships with London's Tricycle Theatre (which brought its epic theatrical event The Great Game: Afghanistan to Guthrie audiences and played gracious host in London to the Guthrie/Berkeley Repertory production of Tiny Kushner), The Acting Company's Romeo and Juliet and the National Theatre's groundbreaking NT Live series. The Guthrie also continued to play host to engaging Dowling Studio productions with our regional premiere of Annie Baker's OBIE-winning Circle Mirror Transformation and the Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training collaborative piece, Macondo, in addition to presentations from local companies, including Mu Performing Arts, Theater Latté Da, Producing House, Four Humors Theater ...

Theater Talk: "Backstage at the Guthrie"
A tour of Minneapolis' new Guthrie Theater Complex. Guthrie Artistic director Joe Dowling, technical director Frank Butler, and veteran, acting company member Charles Keating, along with a number of staff members, take us through the building and history of this venerable institution. Theater Talk is a series devoted to the world of the stage. It began on New York television in 1993 and is co-hosted by Michael Riedel (Broadway columnist for the New York Post) and series producer Susan Haskins. The program is one of the few independent productions on PBS and now airs weekly on Thirteen/WNET in New York and WGBH in Boston. Now, CUNY TV offers New York City viewers additional opportunities to catch each week's show. (Of course, Theater Talk is no stranger to CUNY TV, since the show is taped here each week before its first airing on Thirteen/WNET.) The series is produced by Theater Talk Productions, a not-for-profit corporation and is funded by contributions from private foundations and individuals, as well as The New York State Council on the Arts.
