The Houston SPCA was founded in 1924 and remains Houston's oldest and largest Animal Protection Organization. Completely privately funded, we are proud to serve more than 100,000 animals annually. We remain committed to our mission to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and to free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. Adopt, donate, volunteer, report cruelty: Won't you help us be the voice of the voiceless? The Houston SPCA, founded in 1924, is Houston’s first and largest animal protection organization and shelter. Our Mission is to promote commitment to and respect for all animals and free them from suffering, abuse and exploitation. The HSPCA is a private, non-profit charity, funded primarily by donations, which receives no funding from the Government, United Way or national animal groups.

Sheltered Cats and Dogs on Houston SPCA
Sad but still hopeful video from the animal shelter at Houston SPCA. They're doing a great job with the animals and you too should think about adopting an animal instead of buying from a pet store. There are so many poor animals who need somebody to care for them.

Animal Cops Houston Intro
Intro to the Animal Planet series Animal Cops Houston. This series profiles the investigators of the Houston SPCA. This is one of the organizations Animal Planet likes to tout as "Animal Planet Heroes." However, the Houston SPCA has a policy of automatically euthanizing some of the dogs it takes into its shelter, not because of aggression or other temperament issues on the part of the individual dog - but merely because the dog happens to belong to a certain breed that many people consider unpopular. The Houston SPCA does not even allow rescue groups to save the dogs in the shelter that belong to that breed. Therefore, the Houston Cops do not deserve the title "Heroes". (UPDATE 9/24/07: Looks like I might have to eat my words about the Houston Animal Cops 'not deserving' to be called heroes:) Tonight's Animal Cops Houston showed the Houston SPCA rescuing an abused pit bull puppy, which was placed in foster care after she was awarded to the HSPCA by the courts. The end of the program stated that the dog could be placed for adoption after she recovers from her injuries!)
